Romanian PM Emil Boc asked the Health minister on Friday, 5th February, 2010, to draw a bill that would extend the list of illegal psychedelic plants, whether or not such plants might have European Commission's approval.
Mr Boc believes that hallucinogenic plants are responsible for many deaths among youths in Romania.
Within the past two years, many shops have been opened in Romanian big cities selling so-called 'legal drugs' under the name of 'ethno-botanical plants'.
For instance, a shop called 'Gradina Botanica' (Botanical Garden) located in Cluj city (central Transylvania), advertise a number of six mixes of plants for 'aromatherapy and relaxation'. However, in their FAQ list, one can read: 'we do not encourage consumption by humans.'
Police and Consummer Protection inspectors have constantly asked for the banning of those products.
Other voices claim, on the other hand, that the trade and consumption of illegal substances, such as cocaine and marijuana, has dropped in Romania since the opening of these shops.
