SevenTimes.Ro editing guidelines PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 22 July 2008

Please make sure you read the following points before sending us texts for publication. These guidelines are just conventions, not rules of correctness; they are meant to ensure SevenTimes.Ro a consistent and appropriate style of expression.

  • be constructive, yet balanced and impartial
  • if your news is based on information from other websites, always include a link to the original article(s), even if they are in other languages than English
  • use short phrases
  • prefer the active voice
  • news should have 200 to 600 words
  • use British instead of American spelling: Organised, not organized; theatre, not theater
  • always place a comma before and in an enumeration (the same with or)
  • use single, instead of double, quotation marks ('x', not "x")
  • always start with a capital after a colon: Old appartments: Lower prices
  • do not capitalise all the words of the headline, only the first word and the proper nouns
  • the way to write dates: 19th October, 2008
  • mention the full date at least one time in the text (Wednesday, 19th October, 2008); Don't just say Wednesday, because the article might be read one month later
  • always use the euro currency first (you can give other currencies too, such as lei, within brackets); you can use convertor.ro
  • never use the old lei currency; it's dead
  • never use currency acronyms, such as RON, ROL, USD, EUR;
  • put the currency before the number: € 15, or lei 1,000
  • in a headline, never use the €, $, or % signs; write euro, dollar, and pc instead
  • write large numbers as 1.6 M or 4 Bn (not 1.6 millions nor 4 billions)
  • when giving names of people, make sure you mention their full name at least once in your text (Cristian Nedea); you can also refer to them by their surname only, but please make sure you say Mr, Mrs, or Ms in that case (Mr Nedea added...)
  • preferable, but not a rule: First give the title, then the name of the person (no comma needed beween title and name): Farmec's marketing specialist Mariana Sinitaru said... vice-versa is also okay, but enclose the title beween commas: Mariana Sinitaru, marketing manager with Farmec, said...
  • remember that you write for an audience that is mostly uninformed on the people and places you're writing about, so always mention extra information to help them grasp the matter
  • always mention where a city/area is located, preferably in relation to Transylvania: Cluj city, central Transylvania
  • never use the Romanian-specific characters ş, ţ, ă, î, â; write Romanian names using s, t, a, i, a
  • it is ok to use Hungarian accented vowels (such as é) if they are included in the ASCII code
  • always give extra details about people and organisations: don't say UDMR, but Hungarian minority's main party UDMR; don't say PSD leader resigns, but social-democrat leader resigns
  • write numbers as two, five, nine if they are below 10, and use digits for larger numbers: 15, 245, 5.200
Dictionary
  • judet: county (Judetul Cuj: County Cluj)
  • Consiliul Local Cluj-Napoca: Cluj City Council
  • Consiliul Judetean Cluj: Cluj County Council
  • Primaria: city hall (the building); municipality (the institution)
  • resedinta de judet: county seat
  • Ministerul transporturilor: Department of Transport (not Ministry of Transport)
  • ministrul Transporturilor: minister of Transport
